Born in Culford, registered Thingoe Q4-1899 [4A:849].
1901 census...Aged 1, he was living at Rats Hall, Culford with his father- George CLARKE [35] bricklayer born Bury St Edmunds; mother- Caroline [32] born Barrow and brother- William [3] born Culford. 1911 census...Aged 11, he was living at Rats Hall, Culford with his father, mother, brother and sisters- Edith Emily [8] and Lilian Maud [2] both born in Culford. Cannot ascertain Lakenheath connection, assuming we have the right man. The memorial gives 52nd QRES and that is meaningless. No regiment had that many battalions, whereas The Queen's Royal West Surreys did exist. There are only 4 Oliver CLARKE on CWGC and this is the nearest to Lakenheath |

Enlisted in Bury St Edmunds. The war memorial gives Oliver as in the 52nd QESR but there seems to be no such battalion or regiment, whereas CWGC have him in the Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment With no Army records available, it is not possible to say when or where Oliver was wounded. He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds. Recorded as dying of wounds,without his service records it is not possible to be certain on what day he was wounded or where. No 7 and No 33 Casualty Clearing Stations were stationed at Ligny, so it is very likely he was wounded close to, if not on, the 27th July. The battalion were operating on the northern outskirts of Lens, now covered by the A21 motorway and an industrial estate.That whole week had passed with no deaths in his battalion and on 27th the only other death in the 8th Battalion was also from wounds and that man is buried some miles from Oliver. |
